Rescue Dogs: They’re Abandoned For a Reason

I think I spend too much time listening to experienced, caring dog owners.
Yes, I may spend *some* of my time reporting on the horrific abuses that dogs endure but the large majority of time is spent discussing dogs or writing about dogs with people who know a bit about dogs. I think I need to try and change that. I think I need to see if it is possible to get a more rounded idea how less savvy dog folk think and speak because if I don’t, I’m going to worry.
I’m going to worry because I’ve seen far too many statements like this:
First, I wouldn’t recommend a rescue centre as the dogs there may have been abandoned for a reason. OK, there are good dogs too, but there is that risk.
Go for a dog with a known placid temperament. Small dogs tend to be aggressive as well as large ones.

I’d [...]

The Dog Can’t Come?

Recently I posted an article on tips for traveling with your dog(s) over the holidays.

Whether traveling by land or air, the American Humane Society provided us with helpful information on ways to minimize stress for your pet.

Today’s focus is on what happens when you arrive at your destination, how to be the perfect doggy guest. If you have family or friends who are kind enough to invite the entire family, four-legged buddies included, it’s important to make sure you prepare for your stay.

To get help on this subject I went to the owner of a dog friendly B&B, I figure she’s seen it all.  Martha who owns Ponder Cove, a beautiful B&B in the North Carolina mountains, was kind enough to give me a few minutes of her time to share some great tips.

So, let’s get shakin’ and make this a very successful holiday season. I will attempt to lay out the perfect formula to make you the best house guest ever with Bowser in tow.

1) Make sure Bowser gets a bath. He will shed less while being a guest and he certainly will smell better.

2) Make sure you pack Bowser’s much needed supplies in an appropriate box. I own the big Rubbermaid tubs that I buy from Target. Mine are the size of my dog crates. So, when we arrive it is stored on top of the crate. A tidy guest makes a happy host.

3) Make sure you have the much needed supplies.

a) Blanket or sheet to cover bed if Bowser is a bed buddy.

b) Food.

c) Bottled water. (It can be from your tap but it will prevent stomach problems if your dog is sensitive and used to your tap water)

d) Water bowl. Hosts hate being asked for kitchen bowls. It is just not sanitary.

e) If you use canned food…bring the can opener.

f) Place mat for water and food bowls.

4) Make sure you take the crate if he is crate trained. He or she will settle much better on arrival in his own bedroom versus a strange house.

5) Make sure Bowser is comfortable in the car before the journey. Give him plenty of room. Take along his favorite blanket and allow him to settle in nicely.

Martha has six more helpful tips, and a funny story of how she was once a guest with her dogs and broke every rule possible.  Grab your leash and run on over to Ponder Cove to check out the rest of the list and what not to do when you’re a guest.

If any Dogsters have a funny guest story give me a bark.

Bentley Orders A Coffee At The Drive-Thru

There are a few things that I must clarify before I go on with the story.  First, Bentley is a 50 lb. Boxer and Shar-Pei mix rescue that was adopted a month ago.  Second, the coffee house didn’t have a drive-thru.

It all started when musician owner, Bryan Maher, stopped at the Cool Beanz coffee shop in Long Island to sign up for open mike night. Maher left the car running because it was cold out and he didn’t want his newly adopted pup to freeze.  He figured it would only take a minute, what could happen?

“The next thing I knew, I looked up to see my van coming at me in the window, with Bentley in the driver’s seat grinning at me.”

“Bentley was driving a ‘92 Ford van!” marveled shop owner Patricia McCarthy, 57. “I was astonished, very much so.”

The crash left the shop’s glass front window cracked, some patio furniture busted and the van with minor damage, but neither Maher nor McCarthy was mad at the lovable dog, who was unscathed.

“Aw, Bentley was wagging his tail afterward,” said McCarthy. “He really is a sweet dog.”

Maher still got his booking for the Saturday open mic, and Bentley will be getting a new doggy jacket for Christmas to keep warm.

‘Carelessness’ Caused Dog to Die Slow, Agonising Death

A Bradford man has been sentenced to 16 weeks in jail after he left his dog locked in an unoccupied home.
Wajjid Hussain failed to prevent the unnecessary suffering of ‘Razor’, his Staffordshire bull terrier.
He received a three month prison term and was banned for life from keeping animals.
The RSPCA described the ordeal the dog would have endured as “shocking and heartbreaking cruelty”
RSPCA Inspector Dave Holgate: “This dog has undoubtedly endured a very slow and painful death. It’s simply unthinkable that anyone could ignore an animal’s needs to such a severe, tragic extent. Hopefully the sentence will send out a message that this kind of cruelty cannot and will not be tolerated.”
Hussein’s own lawyer claimed his client accepted that it was his ‘carlessness’ that had caused Razor to suffer unnecessarily.
“He turned a blind eye and that’s where the guilt lies. One of the first things he said to me was ‘I’m [...]

Help Bring Edgar Home

In Brooklyn Center, MN Edgar was stolen out of his home nearly a month ago. On October 23rd Meaghan Poe came home from work, discovering she had accidentally left the back door unlocked.

Thieves had made off with a variety of items, including her best friend Edgar, a Miniature Dachshund. His dog bowl, food, and kennel were also missing indicating that he did not just take off.

“He’s by my side, he is a mama’s boy, wherever I go he goes kinda thing,” Dop explained with a sheepish smile. “He’s always at my feet, wanting to be picked up.”

That description explains why Dop’s life has been empty for nearly a month, since the day Edgar was stolen by burglars.

“Every day it gets a little bit harder just because we’re coming up on four weeks now that he’s been gone,” she said, “but I’m not going to give up hope on getting him back.”

There is a reward for information that leads to the return of Edgar, contact Meaghan Dop at devilbunny6000@yahoo.com.
